Toyota GR Corolla Flex Fuel Kit Installation Guide

Toyota GR Corolla Flex Fuel Kit Installation Guide

Toyota GR Corolla Flex Fuel Kit Installation Guide

The Toyota GR Corolla is one of the most exciting turbocharged AWD platforms available today, and flex fuel tuning is one of the most useful upgrades for owners who want to run ethanol blends such as E30, E50, or E85. This guide explains the general installation process for the Delicious Tuning Flex Fuel Kit for the Toyota GR Corolla, including the flex fuel sensor, engine bay harness, passenger-side wheel-well routing, and CAN module connection.

The official Delicious Tuning installation manual recommends professional installation, and EDO Performance agrees. This install involves fuel system work, CAN bus wiring, interior access, and final leak checks, so it should be handled carefully by a qualified technician.

Estimated Installation Time

For a professional shop, expect approximately:

1.5 to 2.5 hours for the physical flex fuel kit installation.

For a first-time DIY installer, the job may take:

2.5 to 4 hours, depending on experience, tools, and comfort working around fuel lines and interior wiring.

This estimate does not include ECU calibration time, EcuTek setup, road testing, or dyno tuning.

The Delicious Tuning GR Corolla flex fuel installation is more involved than simply adding an ethanol sensor in the engine bay. The official installation process includes engine cover removal, fuel system depressurization, flex fuel sensor mounting, engine bay harness routing, passenger-side wheel-well access, glove box removal, CAN module installation, and final reassembly/leak inspection.

At a high level, the installation includes:

  1. Removing the engine cover
  2. Depressurizing the fuel system
  3. Installing the flex fuel sensor and fuel line assembly
  4. Routing the sensor harness through the engine bay
  5. Accessing the passenger-side wheel well
  6. Feeding the harness through the firewall/grommet area
  7. Removing the glove box
  8. Connecting the Delicious Tuning CAN module
  9. Reinstalling all panels, liners, and connectors
  10. Starting the vehicle and checking for fuel leaks

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

The installation begins by removing the GR Corolla engine cover. The cover is secured by rubber grommet-style mounting points, so it should be pulled upward carefully from the front and rear until it releases.

This gives access to the upper engine area where the fuel line and sensor assembly will be installed.

Step 2: Depressurize the Fuel System

Before disconnecting any fuel line, the fuel system must be depressurized. Delicious Tuning’s procedure has the installer disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump connector and remove the EFI MAIN No. 2 relay, then start the vehicle and allow it to run until it shuts off. The manual notes this may take 5–15 minutes depending on system pressure.

This is one of the most important safety steps in the installation. Fuel pressure must be relieved before opening the system.

Step 3: Install the Flex Fuel Sensor

Once the fuel system is depressurized, the flex fuel sensor and bracket assembly are installed in the engine bay. The official procedure includes disconnecting the factory sensor connector, disconnecting the fuel line with the orange clip, mounting the sensor to the stainless bracket, installing the T-fitting, connecting the OE fuel line, installing the supplied fuel line, and reconnecting the sensor connector.

This step is where careful fitment matters. The sensor, bracket, fuel line, and clips must be seated correctly to avoid leaks or rubbing.

EDO install note:
After installation, the fuel line should be checked for proper lock engagement, clearance, and routing. Any fuel smell, seepage, or improper clip engagement must be corrected before driving the vehicle.

Step 4: Route the Engine Bay Harness

The flex fuel sensor harness connects to the sensor and is routed across the engine bay toward the passenger-side fender area. Delicious Tuning instructs installers to route the wire through or along the plastic wire harness cover, then feed the harness into the passenger-side fender well and secure it as needed.

Harness routing should avoid sharp edges, hot components, moving parts, and areas where the wiring can be pinched.

Step 5: Remove the Passenger-Side Wheel and Wheel-Well Liner

To route the wiring into the cabin, the passenger-side front wheel and part of the wheel-well liner need to be removed. The official manual lists the removal of the wheel, self-tapping screws, plastic rivets, and plastic retainers from the liner area.

A lift is strongly recommended, although the procedure can be done with proper jack stands and safe lifting practices.

Step 6: Feed the Harness Through the Grommet

With the wheel-well liner pulled aside, the harness from the engine bay is located behind the fender liner. The factory rubber grommet is removed and replaced with the supplied grommet, then the harness is fed through into the passenger compartment.

This step requires patience. A clean grommet installation matters because it helps protect the harness and keeps the cabin sealed from water and debris.

Step 7: Remove the Glove Box

Inside the cabin, the passenger glove box is removed to access the CAN bus gateway area. The Delicious Tuning manual describes opening the glove box, disconnecting the dampener, pressing the sides inward to detach the arm, then lowering and removing the glove box.

This gives the installer access to the area where the CAN module will be connected.

Step 8: Install the Delicious Tuning CAN Module

The Delicious Tuning CAN module connects behind the glove box area. The official instructions show the installer moving the insulation aside, locating the harness coming through the grommet, disconnecting the 34-pin harness from the vehicle’s CAN bus gateway module, installing the provided pass-through harness, connecting the flex fuel sensor harness, and positioning the Delicious Tuning module near the CAN bus module.

This is the part of the install where proper connector seating is critical. Do not force the connectors. If the CAN module is not connected correctly, the ECU may not receive proper ethanol content data.

Step 9: Reassemble and Check for Fuel Leaks

Before finishing the job, the installer should secure the wiring, reinstall the insulation, glove box, wheel-well liner, screws, rivets, retainers, wheel, high-pressure fuel pump connector, EFI relay, and engine cover. Delicious Tuning’s final check includes starting the vehicle and verifying that there are no fuel leaks.

At EDO Performance, we recommend checking for leaks both immediately after startup and again after the vehicle has run long enough to build pressure and temperature.

Important GR Yaris / GR Corolla Harness Note

The Delicious Tuning manual notes that some GR Yaris / GR Corolla CAN bus gateway harnesses may be different and instructs installers to verify fitment against the manual images. The document also mentions allowing 5–7 business days for wiring adjustment in certain applications.

For normal GR Corolla installations where the harness matches the supplied instructions, this should not be confused with normal installation labor time.

Does the Flex Fuel Kit Require Tuning?

Yes. A flex fuel sensor installation by itself is not the same thing as a completed flex fuel calibration. The vehicle still needs the correct ECU calibration strategy so it can properly use ethanol content data.

For GR Corolla owners, EDO Performance can support flex fuel setup as part of a complete tuning package. The best result comes from installing the hardware correctly, confirming ethanol sensor data, verifying fuel trims, and calibrating the vehicle based on the customer’s fuel blend and performance goals.

Delicious Tuning’s programming policy also states that power results are not guaranteed and can vary due to vehicle condition, intake leaks, turbocharger setup, exhaust configuration, sensors, fuel quality, maintenance, and other variables outside the programmer’s control.

EDO Performance Recommendation

For most GR Corolla owners, we recommend having the flex fuel kit professionally installed and tuned instead of treating this as a basic bolt-on. The install touches the fuel system, wheel-well harness routing, interior CAN wiring, and ECU data integration.

Recommended service package:
