BMW S55 Turbo Replacement vs Upgrade: Fitment and Total Cost

Replacing the turbochargers on an S55-powered BMW creates a decision: restore factory operation or plan a performance upgrade. The right choice depends on the car's condition, intended use and complete project budget.

EDO Performance and Tomioka Racing share ownership. This guide explains the questions to review when comparing factory replacement and performance options.

Request an S55 fitment and parts review or view the Tomioka TR-TW2008 S55 twin turbo kit.

Which BMWs use this S55 turbo kit?

The Tomioka TR-TW2008 listing includes the BMW F80 M3, F82/F83 M4, and S55-powered F87 M2 Competition and M2 CS. It does not fit the standard N55-powered F87 M2 or S58-powered G87 M2. Confirm the exact engine and chassis before ordering.

Start with diagnosis before replacement

Have the cause of the original fault identified and the necessary corrective work scoped before fitting another turbocharger. A replacement part alone does not establish that the underlying problem has been resolved.

OEM replacement or performance upgrade?

A factory-specification replacement may suit an owner who wants to restore the original configuration. A performance upgrade is a broader project that should be discussed with the installer and calibrator before purchase.

Compare exact products. A manufacturer's OEM replacement and performance turbo offerings can have different contents, core arrangements and installation requirements. Ask for the terms of the particular product being quoted.

The Tomioka TR-TW2008 is presented as a performance twin-turbo kit with an exhaust manifold and front/rear compressor intake pipes. It should be assessed as part of a complete build plan.

Does TR-TW2008 include wastegate actuators?

New wastegate actuators are not included. Transfer the factory actuators from your original turbochargers. Have your installer inspect their condition and complete the applicable setup procedure.

What affects the complete S55 turbo replacement cost?

Ask for an itemized estimate covering:

  • The exact turbo product, quantity and included components
  • Diagnosis and corrective work related to the original fault
  • Additional required gaskets, lines, fittings and supporting hardware
  • Installation and applicable calibration or testing
  • Shipping, any core arrangements and expected downtime
  • Product and workmanship warranty responsibilities

Separate essential work from optional upgrades. The advertised turbo price alone is not the installed project cost.

How should you compare horsepower claims?

Distinguish manufacturer capability ratings, development targets and measured results. A comparison should state whether output is engine horsepower or wheel horsepower and identify the fuel, supporting hardware, calibration and test conditions.

The TR-TW2008 is marketed for builds targeting 800+ HP with suitable supporting systems. That capability rating is not a verified 800+ wheel-horsepower result or a guarantee for an otherwise stock vehicle.
