Compact 16-row thermostatic oil cooling for Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 / FT86, and Toyota GR86 applications.

An increase in engine oil temperature can affect the oil's ability to properly lubricate and protect critical engine components, which can result in accelerated wear or engine damage under extreme conditions.

The Tomioka Racing TR-ES2040 Oil Cooler Kit is constructed with a high-quality aluminum heat exchanger and a compact 16-row oil cooler core designed to provide effective heat dissipation for street, spirited driving, and track applications.

The compact cooler is designed to fit within the limited space behind the front bumper area of compatible Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 / FT86, and Toyota GR86 applications.

The cooler core is connected through high-flow aluminum AN10 fittings and stainless steel braided AN10 oil lines to provide reliable oil flow between the boxer engine and oil cooler.

The 16-row oil cooler system also adds approximately 0.30 qt (0.28 L) of additional oil capacity, increasing total engine oil volume and providing additional thermal capacity during extended high-load operation.

The TR-ES2040 includes a temperature-controlled oil sandwich plate with a built-in 180°F thermostat. The thermostat keeps the external oil cooler bypassed during initial engine warm-up, begins opening at approximately 180°F, and is fully open at approximately 190–195°F as additional cooling is needed.

180°F Thermostatic Oil Control

The thermostatic sandwich plate helps balance proper engine warm-up with performance cooling. During initial warm-up, the external cooler remains bypassed. The thermostat begins opening at approximately 180°F and is fully open around 190–195°F, allowing increased oil flow through the cooler as temperatures rise.

TR-ES2040 vs. TR-ES2053

The TR-ES2040 is Tomioka Racing's standard 16-row thermostatic oil cooler for BRZ, FR-S, Toyota 86 / FT86, and GR86 applications. Its compact configuration is well suited for daily driving, spirited street use, and general track applications.

For vehicles equipped with a Tomioka Racing TR-TS1053 or TR-TS1063 Turbo Kit, Tomioka Racing recommends the TR-ES2053. The TR-ES2053 features a larger 19-row oil cooler core, approximately 0.40 qt (0.38 L) of additional oil capacity, and a dedicated lower-left-side mounting configuration designed around these TR turbo applications.

TR-ES2040: Standard 16-row oil cooler for naturally aspirated, street, performance, and general track applications.

TR-ES2053: High-capacity 19-row oil cooler primarily intended for TR-TS1053 and TR-TS1063 turbocharged applications.

Oil Temp & Thermostat FAQ

Why did TR choose a 180°F thermostat?
The 180°F thermostat provides a balance between daily driving and performance use. The external cooler remains bypassed during initial warm-up, begins receiving oil flow at approximately 180°F, and the thermostat is fully open around 190–195°F as additional cooling is needed.
Do I need a 200°F thermostat?
Usually no. A 200°F thermostat primarily delays when oil begins flowing through the external cooler. It does not increase the maximum cooling capacity of the oil cooler core and may result in higher steady-state oil temperatures compared with a 180°F thermostat.
Will a 180°F thermostat run too cool in winter?
Under normal conditions, no. The thermostat keeps the external cooler bypassed while the engine oil is warming up, allowing normal warm-up before additional oil cooling is introduced.
What oil temperatures should I expect?
  • Cruise / mixed driving: approximately 185–215°F
  • Spirited driving or hot weather: approximately 210–240°F
  • Extended idling: oil temperatures may rise because airflow across an air-to-oil cooler is reduced
Actual oil temperatures will vary based on ambient temperature, vehicle setup, engine modifications, airflow, oil selection, and driving conditions.
Track use tips
Ensure the oil cooler receives clean, direct airflow, avoid kinks or restrictions in the oil lines, and recheck all fittings after initial installation and hard driving sessions. Always monitor engine oil temperature and oil level during performance or track use.
